Hi all,

I know we all have a certain distaste for advertising interrupting our web browsing, but the simple reality is there are quite a few costs associated with keeping Panbo operating and the content fresh.   Even when a manufacturer supplies us with evaluation equipment we still have a myriad of expenses to install, test and write about marine electronics.  That's where advertising comes in.  Our advertisers help defray those expenses and possibly even compensate Ben and me for the time we put into Panbo.

But, ad blocking software strips those ads from our pages.  When that happens our advertisers don't get the exposure they're paying Panbo to receive.  If we can't deliver that exposure we don't have a viable business model.  Panbo doesn't provide paid editorial content or have any other means of supporting the site beyond our advertising.  As Ben E. has said for years, the only advertising on Panbo is the ads.

So, to help keep that in balance I have enabled functionality that will display a message reminding users of ad blocking software that we are ad supported.  This message will ask them to consider disabling their ad blocker for Panbo.

Additionally, I have begun serving a few of our ads via another method that is less likely to be blocked by ad blocking software.  I hope these are among the least objectionable spots but will still allow us to deliver the exposure we and our advertisers depend on.

I'd love to hear your feedback on how well this is working and if there are any unintended consequences.

Thanks!

Ben

Hi Ben,

I whitelisted www.Panbo.Com and noted the change.  As long as the ads stay over in the sidebar and don't contain auto-start video or other obnoxious behavior, I'll leave it.

Hartley,

Very much appreciated.  We don't allow any video ads.  We do allow animated gifs that rotate through a few frames but that's as annoying as we will get.

I think it is a great solution. Advertising on your site doesn’t prevent me from using the site
