Hi all--I would like to connect my new Mastervolt battery charger to my new MasterView Read-Out (via the Masterbus connections) but would like to avoid running a new Masterbus/ethernet cable if possible.

I already have a "telephone" type cable (RJ11 type) running between the two components from a legacy Mastervolt charger. I'm hoping I can simply attach two RJ45 plugs to the old cable to feed the Read-Out, but I don't know which conductors go to which contacts on the plugs.

Thanks in advance! --Mark

(PS: I only need to connect to the Read-Out, I'm not planning on installing any other Masterbus components.)

Hi Mark,

It is possible to use the existing "telephone" type cable (RJ11) between your new Mastervolt battery charger and the MasterView Read-Out, but you'll need to make sure the wiring is correct. Since the RJ11 cable has fewer conductors than an RJ45 (Ethernet) cable, you'll have to reconfigure the connections.

The standard RJ11 cable has 4 conductors, while the RJ45 cable has 8 conductors. In order to use the RJ11 cable with the MasterView Read-Out, you should use only four of the eight pins on the RJ45 connector. Here's the pinout for the RJ45 connector to RJ11 cable conversion:

RJ45 (8P8C) Connector:

Pin 1 (White/Orange)
Pin 2 (Orange)
Pin 3 (White/Green)
Pin 4 (Blue)
Pin 5 (White/Blue)
Pin 6 (Green)
Pin 7 (White/Brown)
Pin 8 (Brown)
RJ11 (6P4C) Connector:

Pin 1 (White/Blue)
Pin 2 (Blue)
Pin 3 (White/Orange)
Pin 4 (Orange)
To adapt the RJ11 cable to the RJ45 connector, you'll need to connect the RJ11 pins to the corresponding pins on the RJ45 connector. In your case, you only need to connect the wires necessary for the MasterView Read-Out, so you'll use Pins 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the RJ45 connector and wire them to the appropriate contacts on the MasterView Read-Out.

Before proceeding, it's essential to consult the manuals of both the Mastervolt battery charger and the MasterView Read-Out to ensure that this custom wiring setup is supported and won't cause any compatibility or functionality issues.

Please keep in mind that modifying the cable in this way may void warranties or violate manufacturer guidelines, so proceed with caution and only if you are confident in your abilities to make the necessary connections correctly.

I hope the information helps you.
