Welcome to the Panbo Marine Technology Forums.
I’m in Sarasota, FL and wondered if anyone knows of a Marine Electronics Technician close to me that is capable of deleting an MMSI number from a Standard Horizon Quantum GX5500S? I have talked to SH and know that I can ship it to them in CA and have it done, but I was hoping for a local solution to avoid the shipping process.
Kevin, I don't know for sure, but doubt that any marine tech can make that MMSI change. Only Standard Horizon can do it, and that applies to most every VHF radio.
But I'm glad to add that this situation is slowly changing and SH seems to be in the lead. Several of their more current VHF sets have an MMSI reset feature whereby the radio produces a code the owner calls into SH, who can then produce a password that will allow entering a new MMSI. More details here, but sorry they don't apply to your radio:

@ben-ellison Thanks for the quick reply Ben, I kind of thought I might find a technician here in FL that might have the know how to do it. I talked with Standard Horizon and he tech there said I might be able to find someone if I looked hard enough. No such luck. He also said I could ship it to them to have it done, so I’ll be sending it off today. I also have an ICOM M802 SSB that has the same issue. I hope to find a work around for it.
@ben-ellison Hi Ben - I acquired a couple HX890s this winter, and one of them had been programmed already. The process with SH was absolutely painless - I followed the instruction, got the code from the radio and emailed it to them. I had an answer (that worked perfectly) within a day and it reset the radio nicely!
