    A couple of thoughts: first, if we’re comparing cars and boats, miles driven is probably not a good basis – wouldn’t hours be a better comparison? (that way sailboats can play, too 🙂 )
    Second, I’m very glad to see that the carbon footprint of construction is also being considered as part of the question – something that the overall “sustainability’ movement might consider as well. People who assume that electricity is “zero carbon” are ignoring a great deal. The same applies to how that electricity is generated in the first place – the power grid, solar or wind, or something more esoteric like fuel cells.
    But it is interesting to see that the boating industry is willing to study the issues instead of just throwing words at it 🙂
    Third, I think it would also be useful to examine the entire life cycle of the equipment involved – not only the construction and maintenance of the vehicle, but the ultimate costs (both monetary and environmental) of disposal and (hopefully) recycling.
