Contemplating purchase of an NIB original Evo NSS 12 chartplotter with 4G for an extremely good price. There seems to be an absolute lack of support for this original unit on the Simrad website.
But, no matter...my main question is which map cartridges does the system use?
Any S/W update necessary?

John, do have a link to what you might buy? I recall the original Simrad NSE12...

... and then it being replaced by the NSS Evo2 series, and most recently by Evo3.
I think they all used charts on SD cards -- Insight and Navionics from the beginning, several other formats introduced later -- but knowing the exact generation will help.

After digging through Simrads support pages, I',m pretty sure I found the information I need, looks like micro SD?. Also could be enhanced with a S/W update.

I remember using an NSS 12 and writing about it at https://sailbits.com/simrad-nse12-br24/ on a boat I had a few years ago (looks like 8 years ago). It definitely uses SD cards for charts, as I was using Navionics at the time in the 3D mode. I'm sure you can still get charts for the unit but I assume some of the newer features Navionics advertises might not be available - you'd have to check.
Software upgrades appear to still be available on their site, but the last update looks like in 2014 and can be downloaded at http://downloads.simrad-yachting.com/software/index.html?r=1002
If that link doesn't work, go to http://downloads.simrad-yachting.com/ and choose the model and type and it should auto fill the page.
