All of these thermal cams seem to be a solution to a problem I don’t have.

If you don’t boat in the dark, Anin, you certainly don’t need a thermal camera. While the cost has come down a lot, thermal vision is still quite expensive. But I think that a lot of boaters who use binoculars for navigation, safety, or just to look around would appreciate a long range PTZ camera. Especially if they already have a nice display to see the results and/or if they can install the camera in a spot with a better view than what they have at their helm.

I’m sorry to report that Garmin had to withdraw its thermal and low light cameras instead of shipping them…
“we decided to no longer continue development of the low light and thermal cameras. After extensive testing, we determined that the cameras were simply not meeting our quality standards and, with their current design, that quality could not be improved. We didn’t want to release a product to our customers if we were not completely satisfied with it.”
I’d guess that Garmin will try again eventually, but for now the announcement means that a lot of neat MFD software development is down the drain and probably that some Garmin owners are disappointed. However, better that than having those same owners find out the hard way that the cameras didn’t hold up to marine conditions.
In fact, let’s give Garmin credit for discovering the problems in their extensive testing lab (and maybe in beta testing) rather than via customer support. And, while classy Garmin won’t talk about it, I have to wonder if this isn’t a black eye for Iris, who likely supplied the cameras?
