Panbo editor, publisher & chief bottlewasher from 4/2005 until 8/2018, and now pleased to have Ben Stein as a very able publisher, webmaster, and editing colleague. Please don't regard him as an "expert"; he's getting quite old and thinks that "fadiddling fumble-putz" is a more accurate description.

    Milt,
Any of the major newspapers can offer personalized headlines in text only format. Here is a link to BBC’s offering: http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/email/news Following the registration link to the New York Times also allows for this type of service.

Lots of questions about this post and the above comment:
    1) I tried that BBC URL and got a page not found error.
I also searched the NY Times site and could find only their complete “electronic” edition which is not email friendly. I’ve read an NYT summary at hotels, distributed to the hotels by fax and email. When I contacted them regarding a personal subscription, the pricing was clearly designed for multiple user distribution and totally unreasonable for an individual.
The Washington Post’s electronic edition is also not plain text, not email friendly.
There used to be a news summary available via SailMail, and I thought via WinLink 2000, but I’m not able to find it in the catalog right now.
If anyone has links to text only versions of news I’d also like to see them.
    2) What’s the advantage of Ocens over WL2K? There is a staggering amount of weather data available there. WL2K can be accessed via Iridium and it’s free, so why pay Ocens $5 / day? Yes you have to have a ham license, but the code requirement is gone so it’s pretty simple to spend a day in class, take a test and receive a license.
    3) Most importantly, what makes one FA-150 installation better than another? Why is Moana Kuewa’s installation so much better than the others?

Russ, Panbo put an error in Eli’s BBC link, but it’s fixed now, and here’s a link to the NYT’s text-only news option (you must be signed in):
    http://www.nytimes.com/mem/email.html.
    2. I think Milt’s $5/day figure is based on what he’s choosing to download. I believe you pay OCENS by the piece, and OCENS claims that their system is so efficient that you save the money in sat comm costs.
    3. I don’t know what the installation issues are beyond antenna placement and cable integrity, if there are any, but trust that Milt will be looking into it!

    Thanks for those links!
I look forward to hearing what Milt learns about the installation in a future posting.
