It’s a bit odd to announce new products that aren’t specific yet, but it’s good to hear that more AIS-equipped EPIRBS will soon enter the market, and I also hadn’t realized that the IMO has mandated them on new SOLAS vessels. Note that McMurdo trailblazed the AIS EPIRB back in 2016… https://panbo.com/mcmurdo-smartfind-g8-ais-epirb-first-of-many-plbs-too/ … and that Jotron recently announced several models: https://jotron.com/jotron-releases-new-epirbs/

At any rate, I’m confident that ACR and Ocean Signal are close to revealing reliable and feature rich AIS EPIRBS, and thoroughly agree that this safety tech is valuable to yachts as well as ships. In fact, though not mentioned, I’m hopeful that their new models will include the reassuring Return Link Service (RLS), which is finally gaining traction: https://panbo.com/epirb-and-plb-return-link-service-whats-the-holdup/

How soon will this new tech be available do you think? I need an EPIRB if not now, pretty soon.

After reading it again they seem to be implying they will be available by July 1. Guess I can wait until then

Welp, they didn’t make any promises anyway

  5. Wasn’t it on Panbo that I read about the McMurdo G8 Smart Find EPIRB with AIS? I thought it was. It seemed like a game changer vice the ACR EPIRB without AIS. I have always wondered why ACR never made a similar model. Does the McMurdo G8 not comply with this requirement? Is it not for sale in the US / not allowed by the FCC? I see it on a number of websites, but it looks like it is missing from West Marine. Thoughts?

According to ACR, testing of the new EPIRBs has been completed for some time, but they still await regulatory approvals.

So the mystery is over and, holy cow, ACR not only has an AIS EPIRB with some nice extra features, but also the first-ever combination PLB and AIS MoB beacon (I’m pretty sure):
