I don’t suppose that my lowly 54 HP 4JH4AE will be one of the supported engines. Oh well.

Probably not, Jeff, but worth checking. If a Yanmar can handle Smart Check it can also handle some basic NMEA 2000 engine data display without Smart Check. The Yanmar product manager told me that what can be put in standard PGNs (N2K messages), is. There are no standard messages for the engine diagnostic stuff, yet, RPM, oil temp, etc…yes.
The fuel management stuff is mostly calculations done by Smart Check, but a plain E-120 will show flow rate, and Raymarine is planning to upgrade its built in fuel management eventually.
The Yanmar source mentioned several engine models and or series that have NMEA 2000 output, but the only obvious one on their site is the BY series. Like most everyone else, Yanmar started with bigger engines and is working its way down.

Good job by Yanmar to leverage NMEA 2000. Is there a chance outboard manufacturers will follow suit integrating into the E120, specifically Yamaha?
