I spent the last four days judging the Innovation Awards and then attending IBEX, the International Boat Builders’ Exposition. My 2018 cruising started with a trip straight up Lake Michigan’s Wisconsin coast bound for Manistique, a small town on Michigan’s upper peninsula. We had something very rare, three consecutive days of flat water on Lake Michigan. So we made the most of the conditions and ran all three of those days for a total of 300 nm at 9 kts. We made it the length of the lake to Manistique without incident. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it into Manistique harbor without incident.

On Tuesday I met with some of the ActiveCaptain Community team, and the key news is that Garmin recently contacted marine businesses to explain the three-tier business “ownership” and advertising plan they intend to roll out in late August. I think it’s brilliant (and so is the world’s largest revolving globe).
For years, Furuno’s SC30 Satellite Compass has provided highly accurate and stable heading, as well as pitch and roll, rate of turn, and vertical motion data to a vast array of navigation equipment. While the SC30 has delivered precise information to thousands of vessels worldwide, Furuno has still found room for improvement and is announcing a significant upgrade to their original groundbreaking design with the release of the SC33.
