Please don't regard him as an "expert"; he's getting quite old and thinks that "fadiddling fumble-putz" is a more accurate description.

So what are your favorite core systems at this point.

Hi, Dan. The full answer is long and nuanced, I haven’t completely figured it out myself yet, and it will unfold here over the winter.

But here’s a taste. A couple of systems that I had already committed to financially, still like and want to expand, are Maretron monitoring and Victron power management. I also own a Simrad autopilot that works fine and recently bought a GO5 XSE to serve as a control head (and also to see how much is possible from a $419 plotter/sounder/etc, which is phenomenal).

I am also purchasing the Furuno TZT2 MFD and NXT radar that I’ve been testing for a few years, though please don’t presume that makes it the best of the four major brands currently on Gizmo. They’re all good, actually darn good, and “best” is a very slippery concept.

However, I do think that NXT is the best Doppler solid-state radar right now, and its performance is high value in my navigation routine. Also, I plan to integrate the Furuno system with PC-based TimeZero charting at the lower helm, so this particular core system is also an opportunity to better test something I’ve only dabbled with before.

  2. You’re a better man than me, Ben – we’re in S. Florida and it was too cold this morning (mid-40s) πŸ™‚ Looking at that picture of Gizmo just makes me cold.
On the plus side, Atsa WON’T be stuck in Virginia this winter..
