Gill MaxiMet Marine GMX260

New compact weather station, enhanced for marine environments

MaxiMet Marine GMX260 is the latest in the range of Gill MaxiMet compact, integrated, multi-parameter weather stations, joining GMX560 in the MaxiMet Marine range of high-end marine performance products. These build on the capabilities of the core MaxiMet range which is already well established in marine applications. Typical applications include buoys, unmanned surface vessels, helidecks and offshore wind farms.

MaxiMet Marine has enhanced marine performance including:

  • Environmental protection to IP68 (as well as IP66) – water resistant including temporary submersion
  • 6-axis compass – compensates for tilt and provides pitch and roll data
  • High quality, solid state sensors – reliable, accurate measurement with no moving parts

MaxiMet Marine also offers the core MaxiMet features:

  • Easy set-up and integration – configurable single line output for easy data collection
  • Robust construction
  • Low power Eco Mode for power sensitive applications
  • Minimal maintenance – low cost of ownership

The MaxiMet Marine range offers the following parameters: Wind, speed & direction, temperature, humidity & pressure, heating (option), GPS (option)

Gill MaxiMet compact weather stations have been extensively deployed by a wide range of commercial, scientific and government organisations. The models are used on land and marine applications both for stand-alone measurement and integrated into larger systems. The MaxiMet range is popular for its robust design, accurate measurement and ease of use.

Gill Instruments is a leader in the design and manufacture of meteorological measurement equipment including ultrasonic anemometers and weather stations.  Gill is based in the UK with facilities including research & development, manufacturing, sales and customer support but also sells across the world through a long-established base of highly experienced distributors.

Note that the GMX260 has many output modes — RS232, RS422, RS485 SDI-12, NMEA 0183, and MODBUS — but not NMEA 2000. It also looks somewhat fragile to me, because the design seems similar to the Maretron WSO100 which was once broken on Gizmo by aggressive shrink wrappers. By contrast, the Calypso that Ben S just reviewed seems very rugged:

  2. Thanks for your comments. The MaxiMet compact weather stations have been extensively tested and are well proven in marine environments. The MaxiMet Marine varieties have additional marine features and testing. They are also weather stations, rather than just an anemometer.

Three months later (Oct 2024) and it appears to still be completely unavailable. Google cannot find a single source for purchase. Curious what the pricing will be, and what countries it will be sold in.

    • Please just contact us at gillinstruments.com – we can either supply it direct or have a worldwide network of long established distributors who can supply it alongside local support.

It turns out I was too hasty in my comment that it’s not available. There are numerous vendors that sell it, just none that list prices so it doesn’t easily seem to be for sale. They all require you to submit a quote request — which I did. Wow. At over $3K, it’s double the price of the Airmar 220WX, and doesn’t even include N2K communication.

It’s always nice to see new products on the market — but it would be even nicer if they provided competition. At double the price for less features, it’s not something the recreational market is likely to buy. N2K is a must-have, as 0183 is a dying protocol on many boats.

  5. To be clear, as this will come up in searches and could be misleading – the list price of MaxiMet Marine GMX260 is £1364 without GPS and £1545 with GPS. The MaxiMet Marine products are intended for commerical marine and land based applications where high quality, robust products are required to provide accurate and reliable measurements.
