This looks like great news for Raymarine and its customers as until now the only electronic charts the company had guaranteed access to were their own Lighthouse versions for the U.S. and Canada, while the global Navionics and C-Map chart databases they traditionally supported have been acquired by their main competition in recent years.

Affirmation from Gregoire Outters — former manager of Raymarine, now manager of Teledyne-FLIR’s Maritime division:

“We are excited to welcome ChartWorld on board with Teledyne and Raymarine. ChartWorld brings their vast expertise in chart distribution and Electronics Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) that will benefit our customers. Furthermore, this acquisition is a testimony to Teledyne’s investment in our Raymarine and FLIR Maritime brands.”

we have only just recieved lighthouse charts in australia. after a bit of a wait.. its.. okay.. but i am curious to see how this will increase. i do hope we dont see subscription based mapping. one time payment and ownership for life is what our clients want

Thanks Moose! Now I see that Ray already offers LightHouse charts for many regions besides North America or Australia:

Hopefully the new relationship with ChartWorld will help them fill in the gaps and make further improvements.

As for subscriptions, I doubt that any of the recreational chart suppliers will soon deviate from the current norm. In other words, we get to own the basic cartography for however long we dare use it but are “encouraged” to get a subscription for updates and extra goodies. Yes, my fingers are crossed 😉
