Oceanic Systems (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of alarm, display and control systems for leisure, commercial and military vessels, has launched the new Poseidon 7, a monitoring and control system designed specifically for smaller vessels. Poseidon...
Vesper Marine’s Cortex AIS, VHF, and monitoring system is the most innovative marine electronics product I’ve tested in a long time. But Cortex is also a serious challenge to review properly because it has so many useful capabilities — some of which look and feel strikingly different from their antecedents — and it’s also a system designed to evolve. That’s the justification for this update, even though…
In this episode, I sat down with Kees Verruijt of CanBoat and SignalK fame, proud owner of Merrimac (Profiled by Ben E.), and a Panbo contributor. The open-source boating software community owes Kees a...
Many of us have been happily beta testing the iOS version of Coastal Explorer for quite a while, but Rose Point Navigation has a long history of not releasing new products until they feel really good about them (and sometimes not at all). So it’s wonderful news that the Coastal Explorer app is now official, with many excellent features free to anyone, and the entire navigation package available to owners of CE for Windows until the $50 annual subscription is instituted…
Raymarine’s SeaTalkNG is Raymarine’s proprietary version of NMEA 2000 cabling. It’s compatible with NMEA 2000’s standard DeviceNet cabling through the use of adapters. But, until very recently, Raymarine has not offered an adapter to convert the blue-striped SeaTalkNG (STng) backbone cables, only the white-striped spur cables. Good news! Raymarine now offers cables that adapt STng backbone to male (Raymarine Part number A80674) and female (A80675) N2K connectors.
Many OEMs and owners still opt for round instrument displays. The VL Flex 52 gauge from Veratron is a simple and cost-effective solution that competes head-to-head with multifunction TFT screens for usability. A unique...
Frank Emnett, Maretron’s Vice President of Monitoring and Control Software, and I sit down to discuss MPower. MPower is Maretron’s digital switching platform and it’s scheduled to be available in mid-February for both new...

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has released its latest protocol, the NMEA OneNet Standard, Version 1.000. This is an open industry standard based on Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Local Area Network. The standard brings together years of committee efforts and is designed for standardized IP networking of marine electronic devices on and off the vessel…
