Velocitek S10, for speed freaks

Velocitek

Two digits, two buttons, two modes…one purpose. The Velocitek S10 is a GPS that’s been waterproofed and simplified so that those crazies riding kite boards, hydrofoil moths, etc. can track speed and VMG. Either is displayed at a one second update rate. In speed mode the right button gives you absolute max, the left your 10 second max, while in VMG mode the same buttons set the up and downwind marks. The S10 can also log 10 hours of data at 2 second intervals for downloading ashore using the USB port inside the box. You can have your data in the GPX format—probably the most universal, and definitely compatible with the freeware program GPS Action Replay, which is especially designed for reviewing your day’s speed runs, even a whole race if everyone carries logging GPS’s. Or you can use the .kml format to overlay your track on Google Earth. That’s what excited our boy Ed about the Velocitek, but now—thanks, everyone—we know that he can get info from most any GPS to GE.

It also has a bigger display than a handheld GPS, so you can mount it on a rail and keep your hands free. for boats without expensive instrumentation that is pretty cool. I’m still in a quandry over what to get because of this one last consideration.

While not as large of display, I use my Garmin Foretrex 101 for sailing, kayaking, biking, hiking and skiing. It even has a nice race start count down timer. When I am done I can upload the tracks to GPSNavX and export them as Google Earth KML.

  3. OHH, SO close!
That is the perfect toy for the idiot on the move (me). I dont even need the display, but its nice. I want to be able to take a small GPS with me on the boat or in the truck, or on the motorcycle, just attach it somewhere with a view of the sky and when I get home create a .kml file.
The ONLY problem with the S10 is…
batteries. 🙁 I would rather plug that bad boy into a USB port and have it charge from the USB port, and even run off the USB port power.
    the search continues….

Kirwood, You might check out the DeLorme Earthmate GPS Blue Logger. I tried it and it works fine, though the file output formats are annoyingly proprietary as I recall. There’s probably some multi step way to get them to kml, however. It’s also not waterproof, but that’s why the good Lord made ziplocks!
